Accidents at work claim 13 lives in East MidlandsRSS Feed
Accidents at work claimed the lives of 13 workers in the East Midlands in the last year, it has been reported.
Between April 1st 2009 and March 31st 2010 the number of people killed was up by three on the previous year but still slightly lower than the five-year average, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
The figures come as the number of people who were killed in an accident at work across the UK fell to a new record low with 151 people dying at work in 2009/10, which represents a 15 per cent drop from the previous low the year before.
HSE principal inspector based in Nottingham Andrew Turner commented: "Many of these deaths are unnecessary, and could have been avoided if simple and sensible precautions had been in place, including involving workers in how to deal with the risks they face."
Agriculture is once again the most dangerous industry to be working in, he added.
The HSE recently served a number of enforcement notices on construction sites in the East Midlands after concerns were raised over safe working practices.
