Accidents at work among farmers targetedRSS Feed
Accident claims stemming from farmers having accidents at work will be in the spotlight at a forthcoming agricultural show, as the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) seeks to reduce injuries and deaths in the industry.
The HSE is hoping to spread the message of safer working practices at this week's Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate (July 13th to the 15th).
According to statistics from the HSE, farming is officially the most dangerous industry in the UK with 38 reported deaths in 2009/10.
"We are especially concerned to see continuing high numbers of fatalities in agriculture," commented HSE regional director for Yorkshire and The Humber David Snowball.
"It is additionally tragic that many of these lives are lost in family businesses. No industry can or should regard high levels of workplace death and injury as being part of the job."
Moving vehicles such as quad bikes are the main cause of fatal injury, he added.
The safety awareness drive comes after the HSE in Scotland mounted an inspection campaign of quad bikes on farms in the country to reduce accidents.
