Accidents at home responsible for burns and broken bones in children

A broken bone and burns are some of things that mean that four children in the UK are admitted to hospital every hour, according to a new study of accidents in the home.

The findings from the Child Accident Prevention Trust, released to coincide with Child Safety Week which runs this week (June 21st-27th), found that while three-quarters of parents worry about their child having a serious accident, four out five think the home is the safest place for their kids.

Six children every day suffer burns that will mean a hospital visit and 45 young kids will suffer a serious fall that could result in a broken bone.

Dr Amber Young, chair of the British Burn Association Prevention Committee, said: "Burns from hair straighteners, hot bath water and hot drinks can take months or even years of painful skin grafts before they heal.

"Yet many of these serious injuries can be prevented by taking just a few minutes to do things differently."

The news follows the report in the Press and Journal that a mother in Portlethen, near Aberdeen warned that it is just a matter of time before a child is injured or killed in a traffic accident on a busy zebra crossing outside a school.
