Accident claims risk in Cumbria as 1 in 4 construction sites fail safety inspectionsRSS Feed
More than one in four construction sites visited by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) in Cumbria last week failed safety inspections.
A total of 14 enforcement notices were served at 12 sites on March 18th and 19th, out of a total of 45 sites visited.
The enforcement notices either decreed work to be ceased immediately or stipulated that improvements need to be implemented.
Mark Cottriall, HSE's principal inspector for construction in Cumbria, acknowledged that the majority of sites they visited had good health and safety practices in place.
"But the other 12 sites are letting the rest of the industry down and putting workers' lives at risk," he warned.
Mr Cottriall added that the HSE will continue to make unannounced visits "until the message gets across".
The HSE recently launched its Do Your Bit campaign, which aims to encourage businesses to get their workers more involved with health and safety issues, after research showed that greater employee engagement can help to reduce risks in the workplace.
