Accident claims news: Health and safety lapses 'cost millions each year'RSS Feed
Lapses in health and safety procedures are costing small businesses and insurance firms millions of pounds each year, it is claimed.
In an article for FreshBusinessThinking.com, Josh Hall states that health and safety should be a priority area for all types of business.
Mr Hall, business correspondent for SimplyBusiness.co.uk, points out that even if it is the insurance company that has to pay out in certain instances, the business itself will always experience a knock-on effect.
"Insurance premiums for certain 'risky' trades will go up and reputations of firms that are shown to have poor health and safety procedures will be tarnished," he explained.
Businesses that cite the recession as a reason for cost-cutting on health and safety will not be treated sympathetically by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Mr Hall added.
Meanwhile, the HSE has revealed that a recent health and safety event for stonemasons in south London was a huge success.
HSE inspector Steve Kirton said such events are vital for raising awareness about hazards that exist in stone workshops.
