Accident claims news: Artificial light legislation comes into forceRSS Feed
New regulations aimed at protecting workers from the dangers posed by hazardous sources of artificial light came into force yesterday (April 27th).
The Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations has been brought in with the intention of harmonising standards across Europe, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Proper management of artificial light sources, especially UV radiation and light from lasers, is important because they can cause harm to the eyes and skin of workers.
According to the HSE, British employees are generally well protected from such hazards, with the majority of businesses well aware of how to manage them.
"Therefore the regulations will mean few practical changes for most businesses, including those who are already managing the risks," the HSE added.
The HSE is the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness, acting in the public interest to reduce work-related death and serious injury across Britain's workplaces.
