Accident claims 'narrowly avoided' as scaffolding collapsesRSS Feed
The collapse of a building in a busy shopping area could clearly pose a significant accident claims risk but fortunately there were no reports of any injuries after such an incident occurred in Swindon town centre.
A number of shops around The Parade, Bridge Street and Regent Street areas had to close for several hours after scaffolding fell away from the BHS building at around 10:30 BST.
Cordons were put up so that the streets could be closed as a precautionary measure following the incident, while remedial construction work was carried out to make the area safe.
Containment scaffolding, which ended up propped against a lamp post on The Parade, prevented large parts of building debris from falling down on to the pavement and road, according to reports.
In other news, the Health and Safety Executive has been highlighting the importance of carrying out risk assessments in order to reduce risks.
The organisation stated: "Carrying out a risk assessment should be straightforward. It's about focusing on real risks and hazards that cause real harm and, more importantly, taking action to control them."
