Accident claims in voluntary sector under the spotlight

Health and safety issues in the voluntary sector are the focus of a series of events being held in Scotland this month, organisations looking to reduce the risk of accident claims may be interested to note.

Awareness sessions that aim to build healthier and safer workplaces in the sector are being held at Rothes Hall in Fife on May 14th and at the SCVO offices in Edinburgh on May 19th.

At the events, interactive workshops will be offered covering three key areas: worker involvement, dynamic risk assessment and promoting better mental health in the workplace.

"The aim of these sessions is to support organisations and their staff to improve participation in the workplace, resolve issues more effectively and build efficient and sustainable communication channels that involve all staff," according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.

An expert from the HSE recently stated that principles of health and safety work best when they are applied with a commonsense approach.

In a letter to Farmers Weekly, HSE board member for agriculture Judith Donovan said risk can never be eliminated, but the important thing is how we learn to deal with it.
