Accident claims in fishing industry 'need action'RSS Feed
Accident claims within the fishing industry could be reduced with better safety awareness.
An "urgent plan of action" is needed to reduce the number of accidents and deaths among fishermen, according to a new report from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).
The report investigated the deaths of three fishermen while at sea last year - two of which were in Scottish waters - and has made a number of recommendations to improve safety on board fishing vessels.
A properly funded and coherent plan is needed to reduce the "disproportionate" number of deaths among fishermen.
It found that there were that there were three recurring safety issues in the fishing industry, including safe operating systems at work, the use of personal protective equipment and man overboard recovery and drills.
The MAIB is body that investigates accidents in British waters.
