Accident claims due to repetitive strain may be reduced by new online toolRSS Feed
A new online tool has been launched that could reduce the number of accident claims faced by employers as a result of staff carrying out repetitive tasks at work.
The Assessment of Repetitive Tasks (ART) tool, developed by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) together with the Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL), aims to help organisations reduce the risk of their employees suffering from musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) of the upper limbs.
MSDs are the most common occupational illness in Britain, according to the HSE, affecting more than 500,000 people every year.
They are often associated with repetitive tasks such as packing on a production line or the regular use of hand tools.
Jeremy Ferreira, senior ergonomist at HSL, said: "The ART tool makes it much easier to determine where the risks lie and what measures should be taken by employers together with their workforce to reduce the potential for injury."
The HSL works with a wide range of public and private sector organisations as part of efforts to minimise risks to people's health and safety in the workplace.
