Accident claim warning as more potholes emergeRSS Feed
The number of accident claims could be set to rise as freezing weather takes its toll on the UK's roads.
Kwik Fit is warning that four in ten motorists have taken dangerous evasive action in the last 12 months to dodge a pothole.
Drivers are even swerving into the path of incoming traffic to avoid one of an estimated three million potholes in the UK.
The company said that in spite of this, 7.6 million people suffered pothole damage in the last year.
Other manoeuvres that the repair firm warns may lead to a traffic accident include excess braking, hitting the kerb and mounting the pavement.
Kwik Fit chief executive Ian Fraser said "The big worry, aside from the huge cost to motorists in the damage they cause, is that these craters can lead to drivers putting themselves and other road users at risk as they swerve to avoid them."
Breakdown service AA reported a upsurge in call outs as the freezing weather that has caused many of the potholes that hit the UK in December.
