Accident claim risk scaffolding results in fine for Hull firmRSS Feed
A building company has been fined for putting workers at risk of injury, which may have resulted in an accident claim being made.
The Driffield-based Shane Homes, registered in Hull, was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £799 in costs for using unsafe scaffolding during a house extension at Longcroft Park, Beverly in September 2009.
Workers at the site were found to be at risk of a fall of up to four metres, with the scaffolding left without edge protection.
The access ladder was also too short and not secured.
Commenting on the fine, which followed the firm pleading guilty in a case at Beverley Magistrates' Court, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector Geoff Clark said: "Falls from height remain the largest cause of fatal and serious injuries in the construction industry.
"The scaffolding at ... the site was dangerous and people should not have been expected to use it."
The announcement comes after the HSE invited stonework companies to attend a free event offering advice on workplace safety.
