Accident claim risk highlighted in finger amputation incidentRSS Feed
An employee of Edgware-based Bread Factory Limited has lost a finger in a dough mixing machine, which may highlight the risk of accident claims for other companies.
Thambirasaiyah Roy was using a spiral mixing machine at the company's factory in Hendon when his left hand got caught on an unguarded beater.
The accident resulted in his left index finger being amputated, with an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) indicating that the appropriate guards had been missing for some time.
Bread Factory Limited was fined £3,500 and ordered to pay costs of £2,926 for breaching Regulation 11 of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
HSE inspector Anne Gloor said: "There were clear failings on this occasion. Had a simple guard been fitted to this machine then Mr Roy would never have suffered these injuries."
Last week, Hertfordshire-based John Doyle Construction was reprimanded after a worker was seriously injured by falling steel beams.
