Accident at work sees firm finedRSS Feed
A firm has been fined after an accident at work left an employee in a full leg cast for six weeks.
ACP (Concrete) Ltd was fined £15,000 and ordered to pay over £6,000 in costs by Workington Magistrates' Court after admitting to breaching health and safety rules.
The incident occurred at the firm's concrete panel making factory and resulted in a steel cable going through a worker's leg, leaving him with a hole through his shin.
After the fire service cut the cable, 25-year-old Jamie Graham was taken to hospital with the cable still in his leg, where it was then removed.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found the company did not have a proper inspection system in place.
"This terrifying incident should have been prevented," said HSE inspector Mike Griffiths.
"The lack of any inspection or maintenance of the grips meant that problems with them were only detected when a grip failed and that could sometimes result in a cable being released at high speed."
In a separate case, an onion firm was fined after a worker broke in shoulder in a ladder accident.
