Accident at work sees building firm finedRSS Feed
An accident at work that left an employee with a severely injured hand has resulted in a building firm being fined.
The worker, Rondeo Schoeman from Tottenham, was left with a severely disfigured hand after the incident.
Three operations to transfer bones from his feet to his hand have so far been required, as well as skin grafts from other parts of his body.
Mr Schoeman had been using a spindle moulder to machine a wooden handrail when his hand was pulled towards the blades of the moulder.
Ealing-based Maplestead Limited was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £2,000 in costs as a result of the accident following a prosecution brought by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
HSE Inspector Jack Wilby commented: "Limited cutter projection tooling is a recognised standard of guarding for spindle moulders.
"Had any of these reasonably practicable precautions been taken, then it is unlikely that Rondeo Schoeman would have suffered these horrendous injuries."
The news comes as the HSE is launching a drive to reduce workplace and traffic accidents among farmers.
