Accident at work results in fine for manufacturing firmRSS Feed
An accident at work in which a worker severed a finger and suffered permanent nerve damage has resulted in a fine for the company responsible.
WCM Europe of Basildon was fined £6,000 and ordered to pay £2,741 in costs after admitting to breaching health and safety regulations.
An investigation into the incident revealed that a safety guard on a circular saw had been removed and not replaced.
The worker involved was cutting a block of plastic with the saw when his finger was caught in the blade.
Toni Drury, an inspector for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), said: "Incidents like this are entirely preventable. Employers must provide appropriate training, supervision and equipment.
"HSE will not hesitate to take action against employers failing to comply with the law."
The news comes after textile firm E-Leather Limited was fined after an accident left a worker with a metal plate in his arm to support his broken bones.
