Accident at work nearly costs furniture assembler an armRSS Feed
A furniture assembler from Burnham-on-Crouch suffered a severe accident at work that almost severed his left arm, it has been revealed.
Machine Hire employee Daniel Gaskin, 28, was cutting up wooden off-cuts with a cross cut saw that he had only been given five minutes of training to use.
The saw sliced most of the way through his left arm, an accident at work that Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors said would have been prevented by the fitting of a properly-adjusted nose guard.
"Training needs to include how to properly use all the safety features of a particular machine and needs to be backed up with sufficient supervision to make sure standards by all staff are maintained," said HSE inspector Vicky Fletcher.
It follows news that a Bury St Edmunds-based construction company has been fined after a worker lost a finger and thumb to a moulding machine he had not been properly trained to use.
