Accident at work leads to McVities fineRSS Feed
An accident at work that caused a worker to lose two fingers has ended with biscuit producer McVities being fined £10,000 for negligence.
The company admitted to breaching section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work Act after the accident at a McVities cake baking site in Halifax.
Halifax Magistrates court was told how an unnamed employee had two fingers severed after she attempted to clear a blockage in an industrial-sized mixer.
A Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that the employee has to climb a two-metre step ladder to reach the machine.
HSE inspector Rachel Brittain said the incident was "unacceptable".
"Preventing access to moving parts and fitting guards is an elementary and essential precautionary measure and inexpensive," she explained.
The news comes after another food producer, Pinguin, was fined £10,000 after a worker at its Boston processing site lost a finger in an accident at work.
