Aberdeen firm fined for fatal accident at work

A quarry firm in Scotland has been fined £96,000 after an accident at work killed a worker.

Leiths Scotland Limited pleaded guilty at Elgin Sheriff Court to breaching health and safety regulations in relation to the death of a worker who was crushed beneath a mechanical digger.

Arthur Jamieson was killed in 2008 while fixing a transmission leak on the five-and-a-half tonne machine.

Although the vehicle was on ramp, it rolled off because its back wheels were not secured properly.

The firm did not provide Mr Jamieson with enough training and information own how to safely carry out the task, a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found.

HSE inspector Norman Buchanan said: "This tragic incident should have been avoided.

"It is wholly unacceptable his employers left him unsupervised to devise his own means of working on such a risky repair job."

The news comes after Balfour Beatty Ground Engineering was fined for allowing 44-tonne machine to crash onto a busy road that could have caused a disastrous traffic accident.
