ADHD sufferers 'at higher risk' of traffic accidentsRSS Feed
Young males with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are more likely to be injured in traffic accidents than their peers, according to new research.
The study carried out at the University of Toronto found that a history of ADHD in teenage males increased the chance of involvement in a traffic accident by approximately 35 per cent.
This applies whether they are drivers or pedestrians, according to Dr Donald Redelmeier, a professor of medicine at the University of Toronto who ran the study.
The Globe and Mail reported Dr Redelmeier as saying: "My recommendation is that ADHD ought to be listed just like epilepsy, just like diabetes, just like sleep apnea, just like many other traditional medical disorders, that is, individuals have to show themselves under good control if they wish to maintain a driver's licence."
This comes after news that a Huddersfield teenager may have prevented traffic accident claims during a three-car pile-up in adverse weather conditions last winter.
