AA report links traffic accident deaths to not wearing seatbeltsRSS Feed
A third of road traffic accident deaths occur to people not wearing seatbelts, a new report from the AA has shown.
The AA Seatbelt Report reveals that up to 300 lives a year could be saved by drivers wearing the obligatory safety devices.
Men are more likely not to bother with a seatbelt than women, especially young males, the report highlights.
In addition, rear seat passengers and company car drivers are among those most at risk of death or serious injury because they choose not to 'clunk and click'.
Commenting on the findings, AA president Edmund King said: "It is astonishing that one third of vehicle occupants killed do not wear seat belts."
The AA is calling on the government to increase the penalty for not wearing a seatbelt to include points on drivers' licenses.
Last week, a traffic accident reduction scheme in Cambridgeshire was praised for reducing deaths from car and motorcycle accidents on a dangerous stretch of the A14.
