AA: Insurers hit with £2.85m in pothole accident claimsRSS Feed
Vehicle damage is a risk for motorists who drive through potholes, it has been suggested, alongside the potential for an accident claim.
Insurers fork out around £2.85 million per month for pothole claims, according to estimates by AA Insurance.
This equates to around 1,900 claims during a single 30-day period, claims Simon Douglas, director of the insurer.
He explained: "That's just the tip of the iceberg, because it takes serious damage to make it worth insurance claim.
"Garages and tyre centres are dealing with countless thousands of punctured tyres, damaged tracking or broken springs which don't justify making a claim."
In January, Potholes.co.uk warned drivers to be aware of the growing problem of invisible potholes, which often remain unnoticed until it is too late because they are filled with water.
This results in damage to vehicles, and potentially an accident claim.
Warranty Direct's Duncan McClure Fisher said: "Treacherous ice and snow may be at the forefront of drivers' minds as the main hazard, but potholes are another danger they need to be aware of."
