Neck injury
Neck injury overview
A neck injury generally describes an injury to the muscles and tissue of the neck. If damage was found in the spinal column or cord, this would be described as a spinal injury.
Types of neck injury
Neck injuries fall into several classifications. Muscle strains are tears in the muscle fibres of the neck. This type of injury is common in accidents resulting in whiplash. A muscle strain will cause stiffness headaches and dizziness. A stinger is an injury to the neck that affects the nerves within the neck. These types of injuries are caused by impacts such as those seen in road traffic accidents. This type of injury will manifest itself as a burning sensation in the neck and possibly the arms.
Neck injury rehabilitation
The rehabilitation of neck injuries occurs in three phases. During the first phase, the objective is to treat the pain and inflammation. After this has been managed a plan is set in place to complete the neck injury treatment. Further treatment may include ultrasound, electrical stimulation, mobilisation exercises or injections. The second phase aims to improve strength and mobility through specific exercises and tasks. The third phase aims to minimise the potential of the neck injury occurring again.
