Elbow injury
Elbow injury overview
The elbow is made up of three bones the humerus, ulna and radius. The joint is primarily a hinge but there is a certain amount of rotation. Elbow injuries often occur as a result of impacts or falls. The complex nature of the joint means that elbow injuries can have major impacts on the quality of life of the injured person depending on the severity and recovery time of the elbow injury.
Types of elbow injury
Acute injuries to the elbow are classified as less than two weeks in duration. Elbow dislocation is one of the most serious elbow injuries and often occurs as a result of a violent impact. An immediate loss of motion is seen along with a deformed looking elbow. Elbow fracture can result in elbow injuries that have serious bone displacement. In these types of elbow injuries, surgery is often required to realign the bones.
Elbow injury rehabilitation
The process of elbow injury rehabilitation is designed to restore strength and movement after elbow injury. A programme of exercise including a flexibility programme will be undertaken in conjunction with a physiotherapist to ensure that full function is restored.
