Burns
Burns overview
A burn is sustained as a result of the skin being injured by heat which can be caused by friction, electricity, chemicals or radiation (such as from a fire). Depending on the heat and length of exposure time the burn can lead to a permanent scar.
Types of burn
Burns are classified in three levels of severity. Each level of severity is given a degree. First degree burns cause redness to the skin and are painful to touch. This type of burn results in minimal damage to the tissue. With second degree burns, both the outer and inner layers of the skin are affected. Swelling and blistering is seen. This is accompanied by considerable pain. The most severe type of burn known as third-degree burns affect every layer of the skin. Healing from third degree burns is very slow due the skin tissue and structures being destroyed. This type of burn usually leaves a permanent scar.
